Dogtober Fest calendar & Details!

DogTober Fest has seen an ovewhelming response from local artists, vendors, musicians and volunteers. It's for a great cause. East Nashville has been known as being "the place" to drop off unwanted dogs for many years. The local group of East CAN (eastcan.blogspot.com) formed to help those dogs that have been dropped off and left to roam our streets. We are helping to find those dogs (and cats) loving homes, temporary fosters and provide food, vet bills relief and more.

The events, participants and volunteers grow daily but here's the recap for what's going on this month at ArtHouse Gardens's at 1108 Woodland Street every Saturday during the month of October.

OCTOBER 4TH
First 50 Dogs receive homemade dog biscuits from Sweet 16th Bakery (every Saturday)
This Saturday ONLY -- photographs will be taken by Gregory Byerline Photography (pet photographer specialist) for the first East Nashville Pet Calendar. This is a reusable calendar and 50 dogs photographs will be chosen for the calendar. Your participation entitles you to a free calendar (plus you could order more photos). The cost to have your dogs photo taken is $35.00 (entitles you to calendar) and if you have more than one dog we've got you covered. Just add $5.00 for each dog to be in the picture. All proceeds benefit East C.A.N.

Night Out Against Crime

National Night Out Against Crime – Tuesday August 5th

Lockeland Springs Neighborhood Association, Eastwood Neighbors, Historic East End and Historic Edgefield are partnering to offer our community an evening of music and fun. The free event will be held at the intersection of 14th St. & Woodland St. on Tuesday, August 5, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. There will be live performances by area musicians, hot dogs and other refreshments, a bounce house, a visit from Fire Hall No. 14, crime prevention information booths, and plenty of good will!

The National Night Out is designed to:
Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Please bring your own lawn chairs to sit in; also, we will be collecting gently used children's clothes and new children's underwear/socks for donation to Cora Howe Elementary School.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
The intersection of 14th St and Woodland St will be closed from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday August 5th for the National Night Out Against Crime. Recent Increase in Robbery

Straight from the List Serv (Thanks Bob!)

There have been a dozen plus robberies in East Nashville in the last
couple of weeks. Many are concentrated in the lower East Nashville area
(Chapel/Eastland, Carter/Riverside, Golf/Greenfield, S.11th, S.12th,
Russell St., Calvin St., etc.). The suspects have approached
pedestrians, brandishing firearms - usually handguns. Usually, they flee
in a vehicle. Vehicle descriptions vary slightly from a silver Jeep
Cherokee to a white Jeep Cherokee and a beige to whitish Mercury
Marquis. If vehicles resembling these cars are seen, please report to
MPD. Numerous East Precinct resources, as in all of them, are out
looking for the suspects. Folks are being robbed while walking, leaving
their vehicles or going into their homes, so we should consider the
suspects dangerous. Tell your friends and neighbors to beonguard.

Carjacker Apprehended..

John%20Bruton%20oca%20208690.jpg

Bruton's Mugshot

Last Friday night, John Bruton was relaxing by himself, masturbating in the cozy confines of his car. He had his pants and underwear pulled down, and an array of porn magazines fanned out on the dashboard.

Unfortunately, Bruton’s car was parked in front of a Kroger at 711 Gallatin Road, right near Eastland Avenue.

You would think that Bruton received the shock of his life when Metro Nashville police officer Jerry Bell walked up to the car and tapped on the driver’s side window. But according to the police report Bell filed, Bruton remained pretty calm.

The carjacker “looked at me and then pulled up his pants and underpants and placed the pornographic magazines in the vehicle’s glove box,” Bell wrote in his report. Bruton exited the car and Bell asked him to turn around and place his hands behind his back for cuffing. “No, I ain’t doing it,” said Bruton, according to Bell’s report.

The officer then forced Bruton to turn around and the two scuffled. “The defendant…grabbed a hold of the front of my uniform… We struggled, which resulted in us hitting the grocery cart bin and then falling to the ground.”

Bruton took off running down Gallatin, though he was apprehended a short time later. Today he will go to court and face charges of indecent exposure, resisting arrest, and assault.

East Nashville should totally be in Cottage Living!

I don't know if you all ever get the magazine Cottage Living, but I really would like to try and get them to cover East Nashville in their magazine. I think it would be the perfect cottage neighborhood for their readers. Right now I am working on a power point presentation to send them on East Nashville and would love to get pictures, articles , tidbits etc for that slide show.
If any of you guys are interested or have something to contribute I would love for you to email me at lg2006@mac.com.

East Nash 4th of July Celebrations!

At East Park down on Woodland they are having the 2nd Annual Hot Chicken Festival from Noon til 3PM. There are free samples from Boltons Spicy Chicken and Fish as well as Prince's Hot Chicken Shack. There will also be 6 amateur entrants who will be judged for the best hot chicken. This was new last year, and VERY well attended.

Next door to East Park, Nashville First Church of the Nazarene always has an outdoor neighborhood block party from 6PM until 10PM. They typically have watermelon, soft drinks, ice cream, blowup games for the kids, and live music---folks bring their folding chairs because the downtown fireworks can be seen from the parking lot where the activities are held (around 9:20 PM). Oh--and there is also a drawing for a big screen TV that you can register for (given away that night).

Notable News...

  • Traffic calming signs are being made and you can purchase one for your yard for $5 at local stores. The signs are urging people to drive 25 mph instead of 30 because that 5 mph difference has a 80% less fatality rate in the event of an accident.
  • If you need to submit your street to Metro to watch for frequent speeders, email admin@eastwoodneighbors.org
  • Cornelia House ( the boarded up nursing home on the corner of Porter and Eastland) has been bought, and donated to be used as special needs housing for the deaf. It will be the only apartment complex in TN that accommodates the deaf.

Alley Cat Lounge, East Nashville

So I went to Alley Cats Sunday for brunch and took some friends from out of town. Very interesting place. I would say totally fun with good food and poor service. I mean, it could have been a bad day, or someone didn't show up to work etc, but it was REALLY slow, and we had to request things like 3 times before we ever got them, which was pretty annoying. Imagine eating your meal without anything to drink for 20 mins. etc.
The food was sooooo good though so I will be giving this place another try.
Other things to know:
  • They allow smoking inside, so if you don't digg that it may be a deal breaker for you.
  • Its more of a chill and eat place than a place to go when you are hungry and ready to eat!Hence the name "Lounge"
  • Prices are fair. $40 lunch for 2 with App.
  • You MUST, MUST get the fried Avacado Ball. Its delish and stuffed with salsa and sour cream.

New Things Coming to The EastSide!

I read this on the Tennessean's Blog (written by Angela Patterson) who has answered many of my curious questions. You can read her article HERE or see below:

Hey all!

Just thought I’d write quickly about some of the new food places I know are coming to the East side. Here’s the rundown:

Most of you already know about Calypso Cafe coming to the hood, in the building where Payless Shoe Source was once housed. Don’t know an opening date, but the renovation of that space is coming along.

You may also know about Mad Donna’s on Woodland. From what I understand, they had some contractor issues, but I’ve noticed driving by there that people are working on the place daily. Hopefully, they’ll be having their grand opening sooner than later.

I’ve seen some requests on the listserv to know more about Veggie Cafe at the corner of Porter and Riverside, and after talking to the restaurant owner and the building owner, it’s only weeks away at most. They’re doing small stuff to finish up.

Down the road a bit at Riverside Village, construction has started on Mitchell’s Deli, which will be in the space Circle Back Music once had. Owner David Mitchell, who worked at both Whole Foods and Wild Oats Markets, will feature deli style sandwicjhes and prepared foods. He expects to open in April.

Next to Mitchell’s will be another restaurant. One of the owners of this property wasn’t able to tell me much at this point, but he did say that it’s someone who’s already on the East side, and it’s gonna be good….exciting.

On Eastland, across from Rosepepper, March Egerton is putting up a new mixed use development. On the ground floor, a coffeehouse will go in, as well as a fresh juice/smoothie stop. He’s hoping to secure a restaurant as the anchor tenant for that phase of the development, so we’ll see.

I guess that’s about it at the moment. I’ll keep you posted.

Do You Have a Bumper Sticker?

My husband and I were quick to notice these snarky little bumper stickers on various cars around town and loved them so I set out on a mission to acquire one! From what I hear, 2 girls designed them and sell them to local stores. The Hip Zipper & Alegria both carry them. Alegria has quite a selection and there are MANY different phrases. These are my favorites. I am pretty sure you cant be an official East Sider without one!
